On August 13th, the Ministry of Data Research published Issue No. 251 of the 'General Social Statistics,' with a report titled "Current Status of School Violence." The results of the survey were revealed in this issue.

Recently, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency published results regarding school violence and juvenile crimes. According to the data, the number of school violence reports in 2023 reached 8,654, showing a remarkable 56% increase compared to three years ago.

Sexual Violence and Harassment on the Rise in School Violence

The school violence type that saw the sharpest increase was 'sexual violence and harassment,' which surged by an astounding 162% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year, with 662 reported cases.

Sexual Harassment in Schools Occurs Mostly Online!

Analyzing the types of sexual violence and harassment in schools, 'forced molestation' was the most common, accounting for 56%. Interestingly, the ratio of forced molestation committed by the same sex was higher than that of the opposite sex. Furthermore, 'sexual harassment' (17%) occurred more frequently online than offline.

40% of Victims of School Violence Have Experienced Suicidal or Self-Harm Thoughts!

Next, a survey conducted by the Purun Tree Foundation (Youth Violence Prevention Foundation) delved into the experiences of school violence and cyberbullying victims. The survey, conducted with 8,590 students from elementary to high school nationwide, revealed that 3.5% of all students had experienced school violence, with elementary school students having the highest rate at 4.9%. Among these victims, 40% reported having experienced suicidal or self-harm impulses, showing a significant increase compared to two years ago.

98% of Guardians of Victimized Students Experience Emotional Distress

Not only the students but also the guardians of the victims were affected by school violence. A majority (98%) of guardians of students who experienced school violence reported emotional difficulties such as 'depression and anxiety,' while 91% experienced 'sleep problems.' Additionally, 78% of guardians reported a decrease in social activities, and 63% experienced conflicts with their spouses, demonstrating how school violence negatively impacts family life, including household finances and marital relationships.
